ADHD Treatment

As the lead Unreal Engine developer at VRpsytech, I played a pivotal role in the creation of the VRT platform, particularly in developing the ADHD treatment module. This innovative application harnesses the power of virtual reality to engage children with ADHD in therapeutic activities designed to enhance their concentration and self-regulation skills.

Development and Innovation:

  • I conceptualized and developed a captivating virtual world tailored for young users, incorporating fun and engaging activities like balloon popping, bow and arrow games, color selection tasks, and various other game mechanics. These activities were based on psychological strategies aimed at improving attention and behavioral control, with each game plan meticulously executed to ensure both therapeutic value and entertainment.
  • My responsibilities extended beyond software development to overseeing the hardware department. I led the development of custom hardware solutions capable of measuring vital signs such as blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and heart rate. These metrics were crucial for monitoring the stress levels and engagement of children during the activities.
  • I engineered a seamless integration of this hardware with the Unreal Engine, enabling real-time data transmission and visualization. I designed a sophisticated dashboard within the VR environment, allowing doctors to monitor these vital signs effortlessly, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of the child's physiological response to the therapy.

Dual-Interface System:

  • The VRT platform features a dual-interface system, ensuring a symbiotic interaction between the patient and the clinician. On one side, patients immerse themselves in therapeutic activities through a VR headset, engaging in a carefully crafted virtual environment designed to stimulate focus and participation.
  • Simultaneously, on a dedicated monitor, clinicians are granted access to a specialized panel. This interface not only displays the patient's real-time physiological data and activity levels but also enables the adjustment of environmental settings and the selection of activities based on the patient's performance and stress indicators.

Impact and Recognition:

  • The ADHD treatment module within the VRT platform represents a significant advancement in therapeutic VR applications. By blending engaging gameplay with real-time physiological monitoring and customizable therapeutic sessions, the project has set a new standard for VR-based therapy.
  • My role in this project has not only demonstrated the potential of Unreal Engine in creating impactful healthcare applications but also underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in developing technology-driven solutions for mental health.

Phobia Treatment

In the innovative landscape of virtual reality therapy, my role as the lead Unreal Engine developer at VRpsytech involved creating a groundbreaking phobia treatment module within the VRT platform. This module was designed to offer a customizable, immersive experience for patients undergoing exposure therapy for various phobias.

Modular Level Design:

  • I developed a series of modular levels, each tailored to specific phobias, including Acrophobia (fear of heights), Aerophobia (fear of flying), Arachnophobia (fear of spiders), Astraphobia (fear of thunder and lightning), Claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces), and more. This modular approach allowed for targeted therapy, enabling patients to confront their fears in a safe, controlled virtual environment.
  • Integral to each level was a custom control panel accessible by the treating physician. This panel enabled doctors to dynamically adjust the virtual environment in real-time, tailoring the exposure intensity to the patient's therapeutic needs. Such flexibility ensured a personalized treatment pathway for each individual, optimizing the therapeutic outcome.

Customization Features:

  • For instance, in treating Acrophobia, doctors could manipulate environmental variables such as the height of buildings or the presence of walls, gradually acclimatizing patients to high places in a controlled manner.
  • Similarly, for Arachnophobia, the control panel offered options to spawn spiders at specific locations within the virtual space, adjust the size and type of spiders, and modify their movement patterns. This level of customization provided a nuanced approach to exposure therapy, allowing for incremental increases in exposure based on patient progress and comfort levels.
